Government opposition to a third runway at Heathrow is beginning to weaken, observers claimed, after the Chancellor pledged to tackle a shortage of airport capacity in the south-east. Airport bosses seeking Heathrow expansion have said it is wrong that the UK’s aviation policy should be dominated by the views of “some 100,000 people” in West London. Economists, business leaders and a senior Heathrow director met with North East firms yesterday to stress the need to challenge the Government on its reluctance to build a third runway at the airport.
Feb 29 2012 Work that it is hoped will transform the UK’s biggest airport has reached a key stage with a “topping out” ceremony at a 2.5 billion new terminal. The ceremony marked the end of major structural work at the new Terminal 2 at Heathrow Airport in west London. With its first phase opening in 2014, the new terminal will be capable of handling 20 million passengers a year and is part of a 4.3 billion package of work at Heathrow.
